#DesignersClub Debuts at Works Social

February 11, 2020

To bring a bit of creative cheer to the start of the year, Works Social, in collaboration with Simpkin Burley, tapped into Nottingham’s design talent to launch the very first #DesignersClub.

Setting the challenge of a poster design competition with a film or music theme, designers, illustrators or anyone with an enthusiasm for graphic design, was invited to submit an entry and join in an evening of fun with like-minded lovelies to celebrate their work.

Pitching their pencils, palettes and pantones against each other were an eclectic bunch of local creatives, all with their very own unique style and take on the brief. From The Long Good Friday to Goat and Pan’s Labyrinth and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in between, all genres of movie and music posters were given a makeover, demonstrating a variety of visual styles and concepts. Each of the posters were combined in a presentation and chatted through at #DesignersClub in an encouraging, informal and inspiring way.

Dan Simpkin from Simpkin Burley, co-host and co-organiser of #DesignersClub said:

“It’s something we’ve been thinking about for a while to see if there was any appetite in Nottingham for this sort of event. We’ve been blown away by the standard of entries and the enthusiasm for design that we’ve seen from everyone. We are really lucky to have such a diverse pool of creative talent here in Nottingham and Works Social is the perfect setting to get everyone together.”

Every entry was received with love and there was cracking camaraderie around the room as people shared the stories and inspiration behind their creations. Many people expressed how much they enjoyed working on a project that was purely for fun, practice and design merit, not to meet a client brief or deliver a commercial project.

Han van Oudheusden co-founder at Works Social and freelance designer said:

“All entries were of such a high standard, they all made it onto Works Social’s fly poster wall in our outdoor terrace."

The “winning” three, got triple exposure and were given pride of place by the designers and artists themselves in a fast and furious fly postering frenzy.

The feedback from all those who attended was overwhelmingly positive and so we reckon we’ll do it again at some point in the future. Keep ‘em peeled for details of the next one.

A big shout out to all those who entered and supported the first #DesignersClub #Postercompetition. Check out their talents on Instagram:
